Earlier this week, I had the chance to interview my classmate Rachel Hansen about her past and present experiences as a student, as well as her future in the field. The interview process lasted for about 10 minutes, as we touched on a wide range of topics and went in-depth as to how Rachel enrolled at WSU and why she chose to major in sport management. Editing the video took about an hour — this was to ensure the transitions were smooth and the B-roll footage complemented Rachel’s statements.

Since I am a broadcast journalism student, this assignment was right up my alley. I enjoyed that I was able to interview someone outside of the realm of news, though. It was more of a casual conversation than a news interview. I also got to learn more about Rachel, which I also enjoyed since we have two classes together. It made me realize that Washington State is home to some very interesting students.

When I interviewed Rachel, the main highlight was how involved she is in the Pullman community, and that she wants to turn that into a career. As a waitress at Southfork, Rachel says she admires the tight-knit community on the Palouse. She mentions that she wants to incorporate this admiration into her future career, with a community outreach or public relations position in the MLB.

Rachel feels truly connected to her family, and especially looks up to her mom and dad, who she says have inspired her to go into the sport management field. Rachel spoke highly of the people she’s met at WSU, and has been able to earn practicum hours by working for the marketing department. She makes sacrifices to realize her dream, as many of the events are held on the weekends.
